What learning goals can online French tutors help with?
1-on-1 lessons are possibly the best way to improve speaking skills, and for this reason many students use Lingoci to learn to speak French fluently. But if you have other, more specific goals, the French teacher you choose will aim to tailor the lessons to your needs. Most of the tutors can help with all of the following:
- Business French
- Grammar (at all levels)
- Practical French for travelling or integration.
- DELF/DALF exam preparation
- Preparation for school exams – A Levels / Baccalaureate etc.
- Reading, listening & writing
Whatever your background and motivation, consider signing up for a trial session to see how it feels to learn with a French teacher online.
Can you tell me more about your online French teachers?
Unlike other platforms, we only accept about 10% of the applications we receive. Whilst we look at qualifications and experience, we place equal value on communication skills and reviews received from students. Other requirements are that the teachers are native speakers who can also speak English. Contrast this to other sites, which often allow anyone to teach, even folks with no experience at all!
We believe our rigorous recruitment process is the main reason why the French tutors our site have an average rating of 4.9 stars on an independent review site. Whichever online French teacher you pick, you can be assured that they know what they’re doing.
Of course, each teacher is different and there may be one or two that you click with better than others. So we recommend you check out the videos of each French teacher and book a 30 minute trial session with the one you like the most!
Can you tell me more about the lessons?
You’ll learn 1-on-1 with a dedicated tutor. This enables you to get a lot more speaking practice in compared to group lessons. Each lesson lasts 55 minutes and is taught via Skype, allowing you to communicate with your tutor & share learning materials as if you were in the same room.
As well as Skype, many of the French teachers use other technologies and resources to enhance the learning experience, for example Google Docs (for real-time collaboration), videos, and PowerPoint slides. If you are unable to use Skype, please contact our support team and we’ll see if a tutor is able to use an alternative video technology.
During your trial session, your French tutor will assess your level and discuss your goals with you. Then if you decide to take lessons, they’ll tailor them to your individual needs.
When can I take lessons?
You can learn at a pace that fits your schedule and goals – it’s totally up to you when and how often you take lessons. When you book your trial session, just make sure that the French tutor you choose has booking times that fit your schedule. Some of them have a lot of students!
Have very limited weekly availability? When choosing a tutor for a trial, simply complete a form to ask our support team to suggest an appropriate tutor. You can also change your tutor later on if required.
How does learning with a French teacher online differ from learning face-to-face?
Sometimes students aren’t sure about learning online because they think it’ll be completely different to learning face-to-face. But when they give it a try, they usually find that the experience is almost the same. Once you’ve connected with your online French tutor on Skype, you’ll be able to see them and communicate with them as if you were in the same room. They’ll also share learning resources with you and you’ll be able to collaborate in real-time.
How fast can I learn French?
Learning a language is a complex process. There are several factors that will impact how fast you can learn French, including:
- Languages you already know
- Intensity of study
- Your motivation
- Your level of experience learning other languages
- Your ability to learn and memorise
- How you’re learning
Depending on all of the above factors, it could take anywhere between six months and five years to go from beginner to fluent! If you stay committed to practicing regularly, you’ll generally make fast progress. The good news is that according to the Foreign Service Institute, if you already speak English, French is one of the easiest languages to learn. This is largely due to the similarities between the languages.
How much do French tutors charge?
Looking at the wider market, the cost of a French tutor varies significantly – from 15 euros up to 60 euros per hour. On Lingoci, French tutors cost between €17.90 and €21.90 – with the price varying based on the volume of lesson credits bought (5 up to 40). So Lingoci French tutors are at the lower end on the cost scale. One reason why learning via Lingoci tends to be a lot cheaper than learning face-to-face is that travel and classroom costs are non-existent.
Of course, learning 1-on-1 with an experienced French tutor is still not the cheapest way to learn. For example, you could start learning via a free app instead. But once you know a few words, nothing beats 1-on-1 French lessons with a great teacher. You can see pricing via this page.
