**UPDATE: We are not currently accepting applications on Lingoci as we are growing our newer site, Languatalk.com, which allows you to set your own rate and show reviews. You can check it out and apply here.**
Please see below for answers to common questions. If your question is not covered below, feel free to contact us through this form.
Firstly, you can only teach your native language. There is one exception – if you are a German tutor, we may be able to consider your application if you possess a C2 or native level of the language.
Another thing you will need is some teaching experience. Tutors with online teaching experience will have a higher chance of success. If you are a tutor of Spanish or Italian, online teaching experience and excellent reviews will usually be required due to the very high level of competition.
A formal teaching certificate will increase your chances of success, but is not required. This is because we also look at tutors’ wider experience and abilities.
If your level of English is below B1, you may have a lower chance of success.
Tutors need a very reliable internet connection, a functioning microphone, and a webcam. Note that newer computers often have built-in microphones and webcams. However, using an external camera or microphone typically provides better audio/video quality. Your internet connection must have a download/upload speed of at least 2Mbps. You can test it here.
Lingoci is an online language platform. Students of all ages and levels use Lingoci to take customised 1-on-1 lessons with the best, native tutors from around the world. The lessons are taught via Skype and Zoom.
Lessons are taught 1-on-1 via Skype and Zoom video software. These tools allows tutors to provide a customised, interactive learning experience that is similar to learning through face-to-face lessons.
55 minutes. This allows you to take a 5 minute break if you have back-to-back lessons.
We have simple, intuitive booking software that allows students to book lessons easily. Students can receive email and SMS reminders, as well as add their lessons directly to their Google/Outlook/iCal calendar. Tutors can easily adjust their availability and view their students’ details. We provide support to help students and tutors with any issues.
Students can reschedule or cancel lessons up to 24 hours before the start time. We enforce this policy to protect tutors from being messed around. We also provide an email template in case you need to politely explain to a student why they cannot reschedule/cancel. Tutors do sometimes allow their students to make changes less than 24 hours before, for example if a student has not requested a last minute change before or has a very good excuse.
People who are interested in learning with Lingoci usually sign up for a free trial session before taking lessons. This lasts 30 minutes and gives the student an opportunity to get to know you and how you teach. We tested a paid trial but it resulted in far fewer students – it works better for tutors to provide trials for free then teach more students. The average tutor gives around 11 hours of lessons for every hour of trial sessions given. Of course, some people don’t sign up so it can take a bit of patience at the start. Some tutors teach for just 5-10 hours a week, whilst others do up to 30.
Students buy lesson credits that enable them to take lessons with tutors. As we are a very small company, we don’t currently have the technology to allow tutors to set their own prices. Instead, the price of lesson credits depends on the language and the volume of credits bought. The tutor rate is therefore set by Lingoci when you start, though it is up to you whether you accept.
It depends on many factors, including site traffic, your availability, your language, and your performance. Some tutors earn $100-$300 USD per month part-time, whilst others give more lessons and earn $1000 to $2000 USD.
Unlike other companies, we will try to send your fees in your currency and directly to your bank account if possible – rather than forcing you to lose 4-6% through Paypal commission and a bad exchange rate. If this is not possible, we will look at sending via Paypal and split the fees.
As with other online platforms, if you work with Lingoci you will be a self-employed, independent freelancer/contractor, rather than an employee or partner. This means you’ll be responsible for dealing with your own taxes, work documents etc. and you’ll be free to teach how you wish and set your own hours. Note, we don’t provide advice on how to handle self-employment matters as we don’t have sufficient knowledge of how every country works.
We will expect you to strive to deliver the best lessons you’re capable of. This means adapting to your students’ needs, using different methods to make the lessons as enjoyable and effective as possible.
We will also expect you to stay organised. This includes:
Updating your availability calendar regularly so that students can book lessons without issues.
Responding to messages/emails from your students in a reasonable time period – preferably by checking your email and Skype at least twice a day on weekdays.
Turning up to your lessons on time. Attitudes towards punctuality vary across cultures but students won’t be happy if you’re 5 minutes late.
We reserve the right to suspend tutors from working via our site at any time. For instance, if we receive several complaints from students, it would risk Lingoci’s reputation so we would need to terminate the relationship.
Yes, you’ll need to create a 2 to 4 minute video and we’ll give you instructions for this. There won’t be a text profile for you to complete as we only show very basic info.
If we have enough demand for another tutor and you pass the application stage, we will contact you within 10 days. If we don’t currently have enough demand for another tutor, we will consider your application when we do. Unfortunately we don’t have time to respond to all applications.
